The contract is awarded Baker Hughes Norway and comes six years with the possibility of extension for four years in the life of the Johan Sverdrup field.
The aim is to reduce costs and streamline drilling operations, according to a press release from Statoil Monday morning.
– The drilling operations at the Johan Sverdrup field will start in 2016. Along with Baker Hughes we will quickly establish integrated operations groups. These will be working closely with drilling and rig manufacturer Odfjell, says Øivind Reinertsen, head of Johan Sverdrup.
The field is one of the largest discoveries on the Norwegian Continental Shelf since the mid-1980s.
It may contain between 1.8 and 2.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent. 95 percent of this is oil.
