in 2010 developed engineer Jarle Holt system which looks at the body’s total load. It happened through finmåling of heartbeats over several days. Contrary to what is natural to believe, is not it encouraging that the heart beats like a clock, ie with smooth variation between heartbeats.

The pulse will rise somewhat, and variability between battles will decline somewhat. Somewhat simplified, one can say that it is stressed, sick, tired or pacemaker.

His pattern has become increasingly popular over the last five years, among other things Holts system used around 200 top athletes in 17 different sports, where around 100 are European and American athletes in the world. In addition, it is used also by the US military, air traffic controllers and police.

He has read D2S documentary about sport hearts which researchers at the hospital believe they are on the trail of a new heart disease caused by exercise. Research is conducted at both elite athletes and super recreational athletes who have trained hard. Holt believes it is important to add that not only is the actual training that can lead to heart ailments in athletes.

– Five percent of those we’ve checked have what we call cardiac arrhythmias as extensively we suggest it being evaluated. Most often it is completely harmless, but sometimes it has been vital to get it examined.



Rest is the main problem

He notes that when the total load was reduced through the quieter or less training, combined with better rest went heart in most cases return to normal function.

– we have a clear perception that the main problem is the lack of rest, more than the workout itself. If all recovered sufficiently in terms of overall impact, we would have fewer heart problems, says Holt and uses cross-country sport’s toughest competition as an example.

After the monster hill in Tour de Ski throwing athletes themselves disappointed and half dead across the finish line and said on live TV that they must go home to train more and harder to get better. But Holt points out that often the opposite is happening. Many athletes train down instead of up because they do not know when the body is stimulated positively of training and when training has a negative effect.

Worried exercisers

– Some are the almost like addicts. For professional athletes go there often good, because they can rest as much. But if you are a father of three or mother working full time and training junkie so it is often much harder to give a good answer to our most frequently asked questions: “Why are you doing this here?” The argument often begins with “eeeh, do not know, have not no good answer, “said Holt.

He believes athletes and leaders affect many when it comes to commitment among exercisers and think they should be careful what they signaled outwardly about reckless driver.

– it’s a certain signal effect. But it is first and foremost that top athletes are not working next door, while others when driving on without considering the overall load. for elite athletes this is not a hobby but a job. Those who work must also ponder on whether it is possible to work twice, it is well few or none that are created for two tough jobs, says coach in cross country Vidar Løfshus .
