It has been on the cards since early in the autumn of last year. Managing director Stein Nilsen in Widerøe has previously confirmed to DN that the company is looking at ordering new jets to be gearing to new growth.

today, it becomes clear that Widerøe have bought three jet aircraft from brazilian Embraer of the type Embraer E190 E2. The three planes have a katalogpris on well 500 million, and usually get the airline of between 40 and 50 per cent discount.

In addition, Widerøe option to order more aircraft in the next few years, and together comprise the agreement 15 jets. Overall kontraktsbeløp for all the planes is close to 900 million dollars, or approximately seven billion, before discounts.

I can’t say how much we will pay for the planes, but it is well well known that no airlines ends up with to pay the list price. This is a good deal for Widerøe, says Stein Nilsen to DN.

He is in Dublin, Ireland today to meet the factory.

– How does it feel to buy new planes?

We are of course thrilled. It is spicy with that it becomes a great challenge to raise a whole new commitment in the company, ” he says.

DN wrote in november of last year about widerøe’s plans to expand, with jets, in addition to propellflyene of the type Dash 8 from Bombardier, as in the day flying along the coast and to the neighbouring countries. Lower demand and new flyavgifter on the usual Widerøe-routes has forced the company to look at new opportunities. Paradoxically, the new flypassasjeravgiften, which should have impact, contributed to the Aircraft buy new aircraft.

Widerøe has ordered three aircraft of the type Embraer E190 E2. The order can be on a total of 15 aircraft with a list price of approximately seven billion (900 million dollars).

the Aircraft will get approximately 16 per cent lower fuel consumption than the current model of the Embraer E190, and comes on the market next year.

In addition to jets help to reduce the cost level in the company.

The new aircraft can be used in three ways in the future:

  • In the first place to be the planes used on domestic routes in Widerøe where passasjergrunnlaget is large enough for such aircraft, or direct flights that are not operated today.
  • Later it could be necessary to offer rental of aircraft with crew, the so-called “wet lease”, to the other airlines.
  • Aircraft will also have a new aircraft that is better adapted to the planned regionalflyplasser in Helgeland and Lofoten in Nordland.

– The first three planes we will accept the first half of 2018. It is too early to say which routes they are put into, but it is obvious that they are stationed in Bergen and Torp airport at Sandefjord.

If there are new routes, Widerøe find opportunities outside the stamrutene between the large cities.

– We will not go in direct competition with SAS and Norwegian, ” says Nilsen.

New direct flights will, however, mean that many passengers have to fly via Oslo Airport with the two competitors, as in the day. Indirect provides the increased competition for SAS and Norwegian.

New routes between South – and North-Norway shall be in the plans.

New collective bargaining

Widerøe-the board of directors shall have said yes to plans for flykjøp early in December, and gave Nilsen and management the mandate to negotiate further with Embraer and canadian Bombardier. The company agreed with Embraer just hours before christmas. Embraer-the aircraft has 114 seats. Bombardier-planes have up to 160 seats.

– Little christmas eve we entered into an agreement with Embraer. Their aircraft are better suited to our plans and routes, and their time of delivery was the most flexible, ” says Nilsen.

There remained one point. In the fall said Nilsen that the pilots and cabin crew had to go with the cheaper collective agreement for the company to buy the aircraft. Such agreements were approved by the trade unions in the romjulen through reconciliation.

Two changes in the agreements have the Aircraft got through. The pension agreement is part of the pilot’s least favorite collective agreement, and pilots have said yes to go over from performance to a defined contribution plan from the new year. Then the flight attendant moved over at the same time. In addition, the Aircraft got through that the pilots will be working more days with the same salary as previously. The number of working days for the pilots is increased with in the range of eight to ten days per year. For some of the pilots is the increase from 167 to 183 days in the year.

“We’ve been through a streamlining that is necessary to bring down the cost level and be competitive with other actors,” says Nilsen.

If Widerøe will participate in the international market for rental with crew, are the players from Southern Europe or Ireland even provide payroll. They are also used in Scandinavia, for example, of the SAS.

– Some actors may have a cost advantage at staff, but we have the benefits of being present with bases in Norway, ” says Nilsen.
