Coop announced Monday morning that retail buyer ICA Norway. This goes against the three grocery chains in Norway, if the Competition Authority approves acquisition.
– We just have to deal with the world as it is, says Jan Lived, owner of the company Scandza including own challenges companies Synnøve Finden, Sørlandschips and Finsbråten.
– Can be difficult to get to with new products?
– When you have good quality, good pprodukter and behave properly, there is room for the likes of us. When the market changes, we just get better. It’s so simple, says Lived.
Major Acquisitions
Executive Vice President Orkla, Håkon Magerli points out that it is a more concentrated grocery market.
– It is too early to say what impact this will have, he says.
– Is there an advantage to being a major supplier when it is now becoming a smaller competitor?
– We think we have a good base to compete in this highly concentrated Norwegian grocery market, and the changes we have made in recent years have been important to address this situation, he says, and refers to the acquisition of Jordan and Rieber & amp; Sun, and the merger of the companies Kims, Nidar and Sætre.
He will not say anything about it being harder for the smaller players, or if there are other options for ICA’s future had been better in Orkla eyes.
Operators’ responsibilities
Gilde- and Prior owner Nortura finds that competition is maintained despite fewer retail stores.
– We expect that participants understand their responsibilities in a concentrated market, says Kjell Rakkenes, Communications Director Nortura.
– It’s about dealing with good competition ethics and treat everyone equally, so that’s good competition, he said.
– Is that how you would describe the competition today?
– There is tough competition to deliver products to the store shelves today and it will be even greater in the future, he says, and also shows a steady growth in private brands.
– Do you fear that it affects the ability to launch new products?
– I do not want to fear so much.
– As a major player need to be challenged and kicked in the ass by smaller players. Good competition is about that fact should be diversity, he said.
– The need for new law
The Grocery Manufacturers Association believes the merger of Ica and Coop after all, is better than the earlier proposed cooperation between Norway Group and Ica.
– However, it is critical for the competition we are left with only three players in the grocery market. This shows that there must be easier for new players to establish themselves, and the need for a law on good trade practices are just more clearly. These are political tasks, says CEO Helge Hasselgård the Grocery Manufacturers Association said in a statement.
DLF will give its final ratings to the Competition Authority, enter the organization.
Valentine will not mean anything special about today’s acquisition, but refers to DLF’s statement and endorse this.
