22-year-old student of the export fish for the 50 million – Dagens Næringsliv

Frederick Nordøy driver fiskeeksport to South Korea by the side of the studies. As a shareholder, he has, among other Arne Hjeltnes and nudelkongen Mr. Lee.

” We had a turnover of 7,8 million in 2015. In 2016 when we have 40-50 million, ” says 22-year-old Fredrik Nordøy from Sandnessjøen.

Nordøy studying economics and administration at the university of Tromsø. At the same time export his fish to the other side of the globe, and in the year he has had tremendous growth.

Fiskeeventyret began when he as a 20-year old, he heard a lecture of “nudelkongen” Mr. Lee Chul-ho, and got the inspiration to learn more about South Korea and the possibilities there. The process got really started when he came in contact with his future partner, south Korean Kee He Youn. Nordøy had earned a little money by working in a young, and decided to go on a study tour together with his friend Sander Kaushik.

We were welcomed with open arms, ” says Nordøy, which believes the south Korean market is hungry on both salmon and a variety of other seafood products from Norway.

Youn was also on a visit to Norway, and together with partners, they have established corporations for the export of Norway and the distribution and processing in South Korea. Mr. Lee is also becoming a shareholder in two of the companies.

Nordøy Sea Korea Co. Ltd (distribution):

  • Turnover 2016: Approximately 50 million. ENOUGH
  • Owners: Nordøy Sea AS: (35%), Kee He Youn (25%), Sei Hoon Yang (25%), Chul Ho Lee (Mr. Lee) (15%)

Nordøy Sea Food Co. Ltd. (processing):

  • Turnover 2016: Approximately 4 million NOK
  • Owners: Nordøy Sea LTD (35%), Kee He Youn (22,5%), Jun Ho Choi (plant manager) (22,5%), Chul Ho Lee (Mr. Lee) (10%), Norsea Korea Co. Ltd (10%)

Spunk and growing market

a year ago met Nordøy tv celebrity and investor Arne Hjeltnes on a fiskerikonferanse in Tromsø. Hjeltnes has invested in various technology companies and a brewery, and went in with nok 300,000 nok in Nordøys company.

– What convinced you to invest?

– It is both the courage and the setting to them who runs the company. And then there is the development in Asia with a lot of people and many who will have a Norwegian fish, ” says Hjeltnes, who has worked for Sjømatrådet in Hong Kong in three years. He also worked three years in the Marine Harvest, and has great faith in the possibilities of Norwegian seafood in Asia.

– With a 22-year-old at the helm?

– It is a young cool entrepreneur and a very good network. He has a Korean partner and come from a very active family within the ministry of fisheries, says Hjeltnes.

Nordøy have grown up with a father in the oppdrettsbransjen, and believes that this has opened many doors in the initial phase.

Big ambitions

When DN was talking with Nordøy right before christmas, he had just finished the last exam at the University in Tromsø.

I study next to this. It is demanding to combine several things, but you just have to stand on, ” says 22-year-old who has ambitions to create a large sjømatleverandør.

Nordøy has so far worked against the hotel and restaurantmarkedet, but also want to reach out to the retail market. Together with partners, he has also set up a company in South Korea for secondary processing of the products. So far it’s been mostly salmon, but the plan is to offer a wide range of seafood.

– the Turnover has increased immensely, but are there any profits?

It looks like it will be a small profit, but we invest a lot in new products and handelsmetoder.
