Foreign

SEBs chief strategist for Asia, Sean Yokota, predicts the chinese oppkjøpsbølge in Norway after the relationship between China and Norway are now removed.

the Article is added to your reading list.

– This opens doors, especially for chinese acquisitions in Norway, ” says Sean Yokota, chief strategist for Asia of the Swedish storbanken SEB.

Yokota considers the difficult relationship between China and Norway have slowed such acquisitions. He believes it is an important political signal that the relationship returns to normal, especially to the chinese companies.

Up in the food chain

Yakota says chinese companies in particular are interested in technology companies and strong brands. He says there is a clear tendency that chinese companies will buy up the food chain, something that rhyme with kinesernes the ambition to develop further to produce lavteknologiprodukter.

“I think we will see a surge of mergers and acquisitions with chinese companies in Norway,” says Yokota.

Offensive chinese acquisitions of european technology companies has recently led to both protests and concern in the EUROPEAN union.

– There is a general political concern for China in the EU, especially when it comes to the acquisition of high technology, said China expert Marc Lanteigne, senior research fellow at the Norwegian foreign policy Institute (Nupi), recently to DN.

China-capital of Norway

– We can expect billions of dollars from Chinese investors going forward aimed at Norwegian industry and start-up businesses, says the China-based investor Chris Rynning to the DN.

The last few years, chinese investment in Europe multiplied. Rynning think the chinese oppkjøpsbølgen in Europe now can now Norway.

– It will surprise me big if not China will be one of the largest sources of capital going forward for Norwegian industry.

From 2010 to 2015, chinese mergers and acquisitions, so-called M&A transactions in the EU has increased from about two billion euro in 2010 to 20 billion euros in 2015, according to a report from the american rådgivingsselskapet Rhodium Group. It is equal to 185 billion. Agreements made with companies in european countries outside the EU, such as the Norwegian Opera, is not included in the report.

the Sale of the Norwegian internettselskapet Opera to a chinese consortium led by the fund the Golden Brick the Silk Road was completed earlier in the year.

I expect that the normalisation of the relationship can set the speed in investments and acquisitions at the Oslo stock Exchange and at private companies, ” says Rynning.

Increased

Especially the germans are now running a tougher and more restrictive line towards the acquisition of companies outside the EU, especially chinese companies. Germany set itself with full weight behind a new EU proposal that tightens into the possibilities of companies outside the EU can buy european companies that possess the key technology used.

– IN the EU, there is great concern that sensitive information be shared with the authorities in Beijing, especially when it comes to technology, according to Lanteigne.

Yokota believes it will also be much easier for Norwegian companies that wish to invest in China, but that the big bet therefore that will happen the other way.

Norway’s trade with China has increased in spite of the political conflict, and Yokota don’t think the normalisation means so much for the trade itself.

This is of course positive, but it will probably not mean so much for the trade between Norway and China, ” says Yokota.

Trump effect?

SEB-the strategist believes the election of Donald Trump to the american president may have been the trigger for the over six-year long conflict between China and Norway are now finally bilegges.

– China is afraid of Trump, and this is a signal that China now prefer to wager on Europe, ” says Yokota.

Trump has already laid out with the authorities in Beijing at the to flirt with selvstyremyndighetene on Taiwan. The chinese are little pleased with the fact that Trump took a phone call from taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen, who congratulated Trump with valgseieren. This is a clear break with what until now has been the United states ‘ official policy, which recognizes China’s claims over Taiwan, although the island has been self-governed since 1949.

Chinese companies have encountered obstacles in the united STATES. Technology company Huawei has been excluded from build mobiltelefoninettverk in the united STATES, with reference to the fact that this may threaten national security.

Trump has announced that american goods and services will be given priority. He has also moved strongly against the United states ‘ trade agreements with China, which he believes favors the chinese companies at the expense of the us.
