The IMF boss sentenced for a payout to a businessman – E24

the head of The international monetary fund (IMF), French Christine Lagarde (60), is convicted of misconduct, after having approved a payout to a French businessman.

But she lets go of the fengselstraff, according to nyhetsbyråene AFP and AP.

Monday’s judgment fell in the Cour de Justice de la République, a special court that is considering cases against government officials who are accused of having broken the law. – We would have preferred a clear and simple disputed this claim. But it is important to note that the court decided not to idømme Lagarde any penalty, says her defender Patrick Maisonneuve.

Lagarde was indicted for gross negligence that led to the abuse of public funds.

the Case concerns a payout of just over 400 million euros in compensation to the French financier Bernard Tapie. Tapie received the replacement after it was meklet up a settlement in a prolonged dispute between him and the state bank Credit Lyonnais.

It was one of then-president Nicolas sarkozy’s close supporters, Bernard Tapie, and his company, who received the money from the partly state-owned bank Credit Lyonnais.

the Police suspected that the mediation was beneficial for Tapie because he supported Sarkozy in the presidential election campaigns in 2007.

Lagarde was finance minister and approved that the dispute went to mediation. The now 73-year-old Tapie was later ordered to pay back the money.

Lagarde has on its side all of the time rejected that she has done something wrong.

Tapie is known as the former owner of the football club Olympique Marseille.

They won the Champions Leauge under his leadership in 1993, but was then demoted because of kampfiksing and economic talks between iran. Tapie was convicted for this.

He is also the former convicted of tax evasion.

Lagardes fate was decided by the three judges and twelve members of parliament from both chambers of the national assembly, in a spesialrett for the ministers.

Prosecutor Jean-Claude Marin said on Thursday that he does not support a judgment against Lagarde.

Already in 2015, recommended the prosecution that the case should henlegges, the court granskningskomité decided nevertheless to go ahead.
