The attempted coup in Turkey: – We know – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): After 21.48 on Thursday evening came the first reports of what is supposed to be a coup attempt in Turkey.

Since then a lot has happened. The time 6:15 reported the Associated Press at least 60 killed.

At least 150 people will be driven to Haydarpasa Numun Hospital in Uskudar district of Istanbul, says a spokesperson for the hospital to AP news agency.

Civilians attacked

This after several demonstrations had been attacked by soldiers in tanks and militærhelikopterer during nighttime.

Several other places hostilities led to loss of lives, according to Turkish media.

Behind the attacks are a breakaway group from the army, according to the authorities.

They point to the recently deposed officer, Muharrem Kose, who masterminded the attack.

This has so far not been confirmed by any independent source.

Parliament hit by bomb

Several public buildings have been attacked, and the parliament in Ankara has been hit by a bomb.

Erdogan out of danger

One that has not been directly affected by these attacks is President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He was on holiday in Marmaris, a town south-west of the country when the attacks started.

Now he finds himself in Istanbul where he earlier in the night gave a speech in which he promised a swift and relentless process against coup makers.



– 336 arrested

– Those behind the attempted coup will pay a very high price for his betrayal, said Erdogan TV channel NTV.

So far 754 have been arrested in connection with the coup attempt, according to state-owned Anadolu, and it appears that the authorities have relatively good control of the situation in Istanbul – where Erdogan landed in the night.

in the rest of the country seems things more unclear, and at 6:48 the morning of the day there was still fighting in Ankara.

Tentative no damage to the Norwegians

There are yet no reports of damage to the Norwegians in Turkey. This despite the fact that especially Istanbul is a popular destination.

Foreign Affairs advises against all travel to Turkey as not strictly necessary.

Minister Brende reiterated yesterday MFA travel advice not to travel to Turkey unless it is absolutely crucial needed.

– there is too great a risk so we are considering it, says Brende.
