The oil and gas industry has no other choice than a fundamental restructuring ahead, said Sætre when he initiated under Norwegian Industries’ conference at Alna in Oslo Monday afternoon.
– We have been through major restructuring before but this time you can not just bet that things will work out by themselves, or believe that it’s enough to adjust the course slightly. The industry must think fundamentally new, said Statoil chief.
The climate issue
Sætre says climate issue will change the entire industry, but that it is important not to look at the green shift as a threat.
– We’ll look at it as a set of opportunities, and Statoil will help to drive change toward a low-carbon society, said Sætre.
He insisted that the company going forward will be a world leader in energy and carbon efficient production of oil and gas, and ready to develop a profitable business in renewable energy.
Sætre pointed out that Statoil is already heavily involved in several offshore wind farms, which together will be able to supply energy to 1 million European citizens.
want Lofoten
it is also important that the industry gets access to new exploration areas, said Sætre, referring to the world will be dependent on oil and gas production in decades years to come.
Sætre believes oil and gas production to seamlessly coexist with the fishing industry and tourism in Lofoten, Vesterålen and Senja with current technology and requirements for safe operation. He urged the authorities to give the go-ahead to an impact assessment of the disputed area.
Sætre pointed out that it takes a long time – usually ten to fifteen – years before a new area will be ready to go into production.
– by 2025, most planned new discoveries be fully developed, the question is what comes after it. The decisions we make today will therefore place major constraints on the mood of Norwegian Industries twenty year anniversary, said Sætre, in a reference to the Norwegian Industrial year celebrates ten years.
