Oil well in the north Sea was out of control – VG

Statoil is now working to normalize the situation in a well on the Troll field in the north Sea after an accident the previous weekend. The psa says that the situation is serious.

Sources say to oljenettstedet Upstream that the situation on the drilling platform “Songa Endurance” is “dangerous” and that it is the most serious incident in the north Sea in a long time.

the Incident happened during the plugging of a production well on the Troll field last Saturday.

New event Thursday

Friday afternoon, confirms Statoil faced with VG that it was a different, but less serious, brønnhendelse on naboplattformen “COSI Promoter”, which also operates on the Troll field, Thursday night:

Under the efforts to put in place a casing in a well, has the tube stuck. This will be drawn out again. We consider this as a pure operational challenge, and it involves no risks related to well control, writes Ola Anders Skauby, press spokesman of Statoil, in a text message to VG.

Statoil: We have control

Statoil damper now down ulykkesfaren on the “Songa Endurance”:

– the Status of the well is that the situation is stable. We have used drilling fluid/mud to push down the gas that was in the produksjonsrørets ringrom, and we have re-established two barriers. We have a limited loss of drilling fluid, which is common on the Troll because of the long reservoarseksjoner. The well is replenished and we have sufficient drilling fluids available, informs Statoil to NTB on Friday afternoon.

Danger of major accident

the Bellona foundation believes, however, that there still is risk:

the Bellona foundation believes that we have not been in the vicinity of such a serious situation on the Norwegian continental shelf for a long time. The risk of major accident is still significant. Statoil has in no way control and has not provided any information since Saturday. Here it is obvious that something is very, very wrong, ” says Bellona foundation leader Frederic Hauge VG.

Last Saturday notified Statoil that they had had a brønnhendelse on the drilling rig Songa Endurance on the Troll field, where there was a gas leak when a produksjonsstreng should be pulled out of the well.

107 were aboard

107 persons were on board the drilling rig on the Troll last Saturday morning, when the crews discovered the gas on the drill floor. When rejected Statoil that it was a gas leak, but it was found that the minor amounts of gas. A 20-century people were shortly after evacuated to nearby platforms.

the de-sludging valve was activated and the well was closed, according to Statoil. At the same time, personnel were evacuated from the platform.

the Bellona foundation is familiar with that one since this has been running shuttles with mud and drilling fluids from the country in six days. Bellona know that you do not have control on the reservoir and that borevæsken disappear. It just disappears in the reservoir, and here is the danger of major accident significantly. Borestrenger is still stuck, and you do not have contact and control with the reservoir, ” says Frederic Hauge of the VG.

the Troll field is located in the northern part of the north Sea, about 65 kilometres west of Kollsnes in Hordaland.

Ongoing event

the Psa considers the situation on the Troll an “ongoing incident”, and have already started the investigation of what happened on the “Songa Endurance” last Saturday.

– It is a serious situation, in our opinion. Although Statoil has control, they work still to normalize the situation, ” says press contact Øyvind Midttun in the petroleum safety authority norway to VG.

Three incidents

the petroleum safety authority norway has started the investigation of two additional serious incidents in the last few days: A gassulykke on land at Sture terminal in Øygarden, where six people were injured, and a fire on the Statfjord A last Sunday.

We are worried over so many events in a short time, but it is too early to say whether there are any fellesnevnere here. It is something we are now going to look at, ” says Midttun.
