Lockheed Martin buys Sikorsky – TU

Lockheed Martin has signed a binding agreement to acquire helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky 74 billion, according to a press release from the company.

The seller, United Technologies, has owned company since 1929. Six years earlier, in 1923, the company started with the Russian helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky leading the way.

“Together we will offer a strong portfolio of helicopter solutions to our global customers. In addition, it will accelerate the innovation and development of new technologies, “the report says.

For Lockheed will be the largest acquisition since the company merged with Martin Marietta in a deal worth around 82 billion in 1993, according to 24/7 Wall Street.

Lockheed and Sikorsky has a tradition of cooperation where Sikorsky has delivered machine while Lockheed has equipped it with weapons systems. Denmark’s new defense helicopters, MH-60R Seahawk, is an example of this.

Cooperation with Kongsberg

Norwegian Kongsberg Gruppen collaborates already with both companies, including in the form of Joint Strike Missile that will sit on Lockheed’s F-35.

– Kongsberg has a close and good working relationship with both Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky. We do not expect that the acquisition will affect cooperation to some extent, says Harald Ånnestad, CEO of Kongsberg Defence Systems to TU.

UTC will focus on building

Whether Sikorsky has fitted well in the portfolio to its former owners has long been debated, according to Reuters. Outside helicopter production produce including elevators, escalators, fire and monitoring systems for buildings.

– To exit the helicopter industry will make us better able to focus on high-tech systems and services to aerospace and building industries, said United Technologies CEO Gregory Hayes.

Getting the innovation

Sikorsky is behind several well-known helicopter types, as UH-60 Black Hawk and S-92. The latter is used in this country including to transport workers and goods to and from offshore installations.

Previously, their S-61 prevalent on the Norwegian shelf, but this has now retired with a pension. The famous Sea King rescue helicopters are also based on Sikorsky machines, but delivered the license of British GKN Westland Helicopters.

In May flew its new major initiative, S-97 Raider, for the first time. The machine has a number of innovations previously discussed in TU.
