Senior management in the dock – Aftenposten

– We are the best!

On this short, ambitious and somewhat un-Norwegian way summed Enger situation after delivering one of its last quarterly accounts as CEO for fertilizer company Yara spring 2008.

The farmer’s son from Eiker has received much praise for the company he cultivated from Hydro’s fertilizer division, which he assumed responsibility for in 1999. This part of Hydro was then considered virtually worthless. Five years after it was spun off as a separate company and listed on the stock exchange under the name Yara. Four years after the IPO, the share price doubled, and the company had passed Hydro’s stock value.

In 2010, named magazine Kapital Enger to one of Norway Historiens ten most significant top managers. He has received pat on the shoulder and personal thank Kofi Annan for his efforts to provide food for the poor.

Option Reviews

Meanwhile, he has been sharply criticized for getting herself and close associates in excess good salaries. In the media he was proclaimed as “option king” in 2006. During the next four years he received a total of 60 million in salary, pension, bonus and option gains from Yara.

His former right hand Company co-defendants Daniel Clauw, were joined by one of Norway Historiens generous finest severance packages when he was taken out of corporate management in 2006. As Chairman of Telenor offered beds Baksaas an option package so generous that then minister of industry, Dag Terje Andersen fired on all plugs.

Corruption accusation

In recent years, heavy clouds drifted in over Engers retirement. In 2011 started Økokrim investigation of what they believe is bribery in millions paid to the sons of high-ranking officials in Libya and India in connection with Yara establishment in the two countries. An early morning in May 2012 was Enger was arrested and charged with corruption and put in custody.

Since the beginning he has been tanned, with spectacles on nose and followed Økokrim questioning colleagues vigilantly. Økokrim believes Fields gave clear signal that it should be paid bribes in the two countries. The big question is how much Enger really knew. Accomplices Kendrick Wallace has in interviews said that the boss was well aware of the agreements.

“That was the deal”

“Thorleif did not know very much, because he would not know much. (…) He did not, and I said nothing. It was the deal, “said Wallace in a phone conversation that is played in court. Now he says that he that he said during interrogation was wrong but that he did not remember who did what.

Enger has pleaded not guilty, claiming he was not aware of agreements before he was notified them shortly before he quit. He will not talk to the press during the trial.

Shortly after corruption charges, gave Enger out the book “It’s about being the best”, where he shared his leadership experiences, from Yara and Hydro.
