Around 650 Norwegian pilots are now on strike. It has major consequences for air travel.
Virtually all Wednesday’s domestic flights in Norway, Sweden and Denmark are set. About 35,000 customers are affected.
Early Wednesday morning, there were few English-passengers to look at Oslo Airport. Aftenposten reporter at the airport can tell about controlled conditions and small queue at the customer service center to English.
It seems that most have followed Norwegian afford their passengers: Stay home!
English says that those who still come to the airport will be sent home or tried rebooked to another flight. It is currently unclear whether the company will be able to achieve this during the day.
Got a message from the media first
Tori Husum is among those affected of the strike. Her plane from Bergen was canceled and the alternative was a night train to Oslo where the journey goes to Madrid.
– The intuition mine did that I bought a train ticket before final message last night. And it was wise, because we got the message that the plane was canceled very late, she says.
– I think SAS their morning flight was impossible, and it runs one bus from Bergen in 9 o’clock in the evening. So whether night train had been full, I had not gotten around here.It seems that most travelers with Norwegian Wednesday morning had been told that their plane was canceled. Nevertheless, Husum that English has a lot going on when it comes to inform their customers.
– I was told by the media one hour before I got sms from English, she says.
In a statement on its website sorry Norwegian disadvantages strike leads to passengers.
“Norwegian apologizes strongly the uncertainty our passengers experience in connection with the break in the arbitration between English Air Norway (NAN) and Norwegian Pilot Union / Federation and we understand that many are concerned about their travels the next few days “
The airline has said that they are trying as best they can to keep their passengers updated on the situation. Anyone who has placed his mobile telephone number when booking you will receive sms about cancellation.
Complaints about poor information
– I think information from Norwegian has been fighting bad. I think they could have been much earlier abroad to understand that there would be an agreement. I tried to call many times yesterday, for I shall something important, so it was necessary to know whether I had to buy new tickets or not, says Husum Aftenposten.
– Is it English again ?
– I’ll avoid it. It is impossible to say, because it has more to do with what fits. But it becomes the in no way priority.
– What do you think about how airlines are doing in this conflict?
– Miserable. I can not understand why they can not provide the better working conditions. They have to lose a lot more money on this strike than if they had treated their employees as employees of a Norwegian company with Norwegian working conditions. It only makes sense.
More departures set
In addition to all domestic flights in the Scandinavian countries, some departures to European cities chosen as a result of the strike.
English asking its passengers check airline websites for updated information.
Just after the clock 07 Wednesday morning is almost all departures from Oslo Airport affected by the strike. The same applies to departures from Værnes and Flesland.
The rest of the traffic flows normally
English-strike will probably not affect the other airline departures Wednesday.
– The rest of the air we expect will continue as normal. It’s going to be several parked aircraft than usual, but it should not affect air travel in general, says Lasse André Vang Stein OSL.
Vang Stein do not think it will strike a scuffle in front counters during the day.
– escalation of the strike was announced yesterday evening and airlines say that they themselves send out sms to all those affected, so we hope that there will be so many wasted journeys today.
Leier in aircraft
To limit the damage of the strike, Norwegian hire aircraft from several foreign companies to implement some of European routes Wednesday.
– It will enable us to take care of our passengers. The pilots should think that there are passengers we live, says CIO Lasse Sandakerveien-Nielsen in English said.
The union Parat reacts strongly and believes strikebreaking is taken to a new level. They expect that international unions gets involved in the conflict.
– This is as morally reprehensible and unacceptable in the world that here with us. I hope and believe that they will come and help us with sympathy actions and things that can help to stop airlines from carrying strikebreaking, says Parat leader Hans-Erik Skjæggestad TV 2.
Analyst: English afford
Analyst Dan Togo Jensen at Handelsbanken Capital Markets in Copenhagen says Finansavisen that he believes airlines will survive the strike. He believes Kjos may have to sell aircraft to finance further investment plans.
– Norwegian has the opportunity to sell aircraft to a third party and lease them back, and thus free up cash. One should also remember that the strike coming in low season, while the company has cash in the balance.
Jensen does not think that English is going to seek shareholders’ money to keep the company in the air, despite a prolonged strike can be very costly.
English had a cash balance of around 2 billion at the end of 2014.
