- Costa Concordia transported drugs mafia – Aftenposten

The Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia had a large cargo drug when it ran aground and capsized off the island of Giglio in Tuscany 13 January 2012. It is the Italian newspaper La Repubblica who writes about the case.

32 people died in one of the biggest disasters in the cruise industry in the Mediterranean ever. Captain Francesco Schettino is guilty of manslaughter, to have caused the shipwreck and for having left the ship before all were evacuated. Schettino was of Italy First Instance sentenced to 16 years in prison.



Wiretapping

Now tied the Italian Mafia to ship. According wiretapping of mafia grouping ‘Ndrangheta has Italian police concluded that there has been a large cargo of cocaine aboard when the ship ran aground.

‘ Ndrangheta is one of the largest organized criminal networks in the world, and it is estimated that they earned 350 billion from businesses such as drug trafficking, arms trafficking, extortion and prostitution in 2014.

The Italian newspaper writes that it is unlikely that any of the lead at the cruise company knew about the contact with the Mafia, but that there was contact between the Mafia and staff aboard the ship.

The drugs were transported in bags which were mixed with tourists luggage. It is not found any drug on the ship after the accident.



Being associated with the Norwegian Cruise Lines

Furthermore, the newspaper said that the mafia has used this transport of drugs several times. There are drugs from South America who thus finds its way to Italy and Europe. Most recently for a couple of weeks ago, two employees aboard a cruise ship included 15 kilograms of cocaine while the ship was docked in Buenos Aires in Argentina.

In connection with the investigation also has cruise ship from MSC and Norwegian Cruise Lines appeared up.

Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) is a Miami-based company currently owned by Star Cruises. NCL was formerly Norwegian owned and was founded as Norwegian Caribbean Lines in 1966 by Knut Kloster and Ted Arison.

MSC Cruises is an Italian based company which sails the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. In Scandinavia, the Stockholm office.
