Other rigs may have the same mistake that accident rig – NRK

Statoil leased rig COSL Innovator, where the accident happened on 30 December 2015. The PSA has conducted a thorough investigation of the incident, and point to two fouls in his report.

– We take with us the lessons which emerge from the report, says head of information at Statoil, Ola Andreas Skauby.

Now Statoil also do a separate review of its procedures to take rigs into Norwegian shelf.

– We control our rigs continuously considering the safe use and safe operation. Rigs working for Statoil on the Norwegian continental shelf are safe, says Skauby.

The PSA has no overview of how many rigs in the North Sea that may have similar mistakes as COSL Innovator, and can not guarantee that similar accidents from happening again.

– there is a risk of new accidents, but now it is important to reduce the chances of it. We must use the lessons from this and other accidents, to prevent new, said PSA Director, Anne Myhrvold.

There were many players in the oil industry which today turned up the PSA submitted its investigation report.

– There are matters that we want the entire industry must address. in particular, shipowners skip taking in “air-gap” and wave loads. Operators must ensure that this is taken care of in their rigs, says Myhrvold.

COSL, who owns accident rig, is now required to clean up the errors found on the rig. Statoil is the operator and is responsible for following up the rigs they take in.

– The rest of the industry need to work with the lessons from this incident, especially related to wave loads. Together we must find out if there are standards that must be updated, says Myhrvold.



COSL Pioneer has the same design as accident rig, and is still in operation on the shelf.

Stops certain rigs in bad weather

sister rig, COSL Promoter, is still in operation, but Statoil assure that security is safeguarded in this rig.
