Statoil enters the German offshore wind market by buying 50 percent of the upcoming offshore wind farm Arkona in Germany.
Statoil and E.ON simultaneously captures final investment decision for the wind farm, which will have an installed capacity of 385 megawatts.
Total investment in the new offshore wind farm is estimated to be at least 1 , 2 billion euros.
It makes the investment to Statoil’s renewable investment ever, and described as a milestone for the development of Statoil’s business area for new energy solutions.
Many jobs
the wind farm Arkon should lie 35 kilometers northeast of the German island of Rügen off Germany, southwest of Danish Bornholm.
the offshore wind farm will consist of 60 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 6 MW, which are installed on fixed mono piles in an area of 23 to 37 meters of water.
Power production is scheduled to start in 2019.
E.ON will be responsible for building and operating offshore wind farm. Up to 400 people will participate in the construction of Arkona during the two-year construction period.
When the wind farm becomes operational it will create up to 50 permanent jobs in the operation, administration and maintenance. In addition, offshore wind farm, according to the company, creating a further 100 jobs to external service providers.
New Market
It is the first time Statoil is developing offshore wind power elsewhere than in British waters. And there is nothing to suggest that Statoil will restrict offshore wind activity to Germany and Great Britain.
It is applicable for Statoil to invest in new offshore wind power project in several nearby areas in the future, we will believe Statoil’s vice president for offshore wind:
– We look definitely on several potential investments in Germany, which has ambitious plans to increase production from offshore wind in the coming years. But also the entire area around the Baltic region has a strong potential growth in offshore wind energy, Denmark and Sweden, said Stephen Bull to TU.
A concrete offshore wind power project Statoil is interested in, is Danish Kriegers Flak.
Along with EON, Statoil is one of seven major energy players competing to be chosen to build and operate the giant offshore wind farm of 600 megawatts, which could be Denmark’s when the scheduled completion in 2020.
Norwegian gas and wind
CEO Eldar Sætre are pleased to develop an offshore wind power project in the country where Statoil is the second largest gas supplier.
– We have supplied gas directly from Norway through three pipelines for over 35 years, and when Statoil enters German offshore wind creates a new dimension in the Norwegian-German energy cooperation, says Sætre in a press release.
Statoil is already a partner in offshore wind farm Sheringham Shoal (317 MW) and in offshore wind Dudgeon (402 MW), currently under construction, 32 km off the coast of Norfolk east in England.
The company has also started production of world’s first offshore wind farm with floating wind turbines. Hywind Scotland pilot park (30 MW) is scheduled to start delivering electricity in Q4 2017.
In addition, the enormous Dogger Bank project throughout 4800 megawatts, which currently exists only on the drawing board .
– by accessing other wind markets strengthened our position in an attractive and growing industry, says the report from Statoil.

Large increase
– Arkon is a very well-prepared and competitive project. Pre-engineering, wind analysis and network analysis has been “top notch” throughout. Meanwhile Eon the second largest player in offshore wind. We view the company as a very solid partner, said Bull to TU.
Statoil’s total production capacity within offshore wind segment increase by around 50 percent, with the German offshore wind power project Arkon, the company reported.
Once the plant is ready, Statoil will be able to supply renewable energy to more than 1 million households in Europe.
