Wednesday, Hydro Sunndal forward a profit of 218 million before interest and tax for the first three months.

– the prices of aluminum were slightly lower in the first quarter than in the fourth quarter last year, but mainly because of slightly higher production volumes and a weaker krone against the dollar, we deliver a result that is at the same level as the previous quarter, says plant manager Eivind Mikalsen in a press release.

Overproduction

on a global basis, Hydro expects production and demand for aluminum will be approximately in balance in 2016, but that Chinese exports will continue to put pressure on prices in western markets.

– It is still the case that the Chinese produce more aluminum than they need, and this has contributed to lower prices in those markets where we ship, says Mikalsen. Due to challenging market conditions, Hydro launched in December plans to improve our cost position for the company by 2.9 billion by the end of 2019. The factory boss thinks it is important that Hydro Sunndal contributing improvements for this goal to be achieved.

– The competition is becoming tougher, and therefore we must continue to improve. But this is nothing new for us, so you need to continue its targeted work we have been doing for many years, says Mikalsen.

Important technology pilot

In February, Hydro decided to build a pilot for the world’s most climate and energy-efficient production of aluminum at Karmøy in Rogaland. The pilot will be completed in the second half of next year, with a price tag of 4.3 billion. Enova is supporting the project with about 1.6 billion.

– Technology pilot Karmøy is also important for us in Sunndal, partly because several technology elements being tested will also be implemented at our plants in the future, says Mikalsen .

will using wind power

during the first quarter, Hydro entered into new energy contracts with companies that are behind the planned windfarm at Fosen and will after the company knows to be the first in the world using renewable wind energy for aluminum production.

– with both hydropower and wind power in the power mix, this helps to ensure that the aluminum from the Norwegian plants are the greenest metal in the world, says Mikalsen.
