the company is currently reticent about what is hidden behind the vessels red-black-white exterior – which is designed by the Norwegian yacht designer Espen Oino, along with Rolls Royce Marine. As E24 quite rightly points out, is Oino behind some of the wildest super yachts are built, and is based in Monaco.

The sketches show giant glass windows that will be spectacular views.

** bow, one deck higher up, will also be used as viewing platform when the weather permits.

– It has served as a focal point in any of our previous ships. So it has been important for us to get into the new ships, says Skjeldam.

Preserving jobs

It is not only with Hurtigruten that cheers are ceiling Thursday. In competition with 11 shipyards worldwide, was the Kleven shipyard in Ulsteinvik who won billion contract.

– It is clear that the emotional well that our ships every day will sail past the yard builds future express routes, says Daniel Skjeldam VG.

– It is also a sign that the Norwegian shipping industry is highly competitive and is absolutely world class, says Skjeldam.

also Kleven will Hurtigruten contract be one of the largest in company history, writes E24. According to CEO Ståle Rasmussen, the contract will increase activity in Ulsteinvik in the years to come.

– We envisage that 150 to 200 shipyard employees will be involved at all times, as well as two to three times as many on subcontractor ago, says Rasmussen to E24.

Polar giant

Three of the current Hurtigruten ships are built at Kleven. The last ship that was delivered from the shipyard was MS “Finnmarken” in April 2002.

There are more than ten years since the last Hurtigruten newbuildings ordered. Also at that time there was an expedition ship – far less cruise ship “Fram”.

Since then, the Hurtigruten grown into a giant in the cruise in polar regions. The company is the world’s largest on cruises to the Arctic. When “Midnatsol” starts its sailings to Antarctica in the fall, the Hurtigruten greatest also there.

– We sailed first to Svalbard in 1896, so we have a long and proud tradition in this type of cruise says Skjeldam.

Focus on environmental

According to the press release from Hurtigruten becomes ships “at the forefront when it comes to the use of new environmental technology vessel solutions and propulsion systems. ” The details of what this means, the company is in the process of nailing.

As VG wrote in November, the company has a dream to sail battery powered ships along the Norwegian coast.

But one thing is already clear: They have brought with them the environmental organization Bellona in the effort to make ships more environmentally friendly.

– Bellona is proud to be involved in designing the vessels with Kleven Verft and Rolls-Royce, said Bellona President Frederic Hauge NTB, adding that environmental technology at sea is about everything from battery technology, shore power, solar cells, biodiesel and energy management on board.

PS! It is not clear what ships will be named. The names will be ready closer to launch.
