Fewer rivers with salmon – NRK

Previously, the Alta River had much escaped salmon, but last year had the river less than 10 percent. The same applies to most salmon rivers in Finnmark.

Tor Erland Nilsen, Director of Alta salmon fisheries partnership (ALI), is still worried.

– The biggest problem is all escapes that has been. We already know that there has been interference from spawning in 2006, and we have had many escapes in the Alta Fjord. It may give consequences not recognize fully the extent of. We need many years to come without escaped farmed salmon in the Alta River, says Nilsen.

For many years there have been a lot of escaped salmon in the river, and reports show that there are genetic meddling of farmed salmon in the wild -laksestammen, says Nilsen.

– Going in the right direction

Monitoring of escaped salmon in the Alta river and 164 other selected rivers in the country, shows fewer rivers with farmed salmon.

Ronny Berg , Undersecretary of the Ministry of fisheries, is pleased with the decline in the number of escaped salmon, although 17 of the selected rivers still have a lot of farmed salmon.

– there is no doubt that measures are taken and that the industry take it seriously. I think this is positive even if one should not have had the intervention of farmed salmon in the 17 rivers. But it goes in the right direction, says Berg.

Want salmon in closed facility

Nilsen ALI says they are working to get farmers to develop the current technology. Among other things, they want to get farmers to switch to a closed facility and noticed the salmon.

Closed systems are costly, but removes the problem of lice and escapes. Marine Harvest will now try such farms.

– The very best is to get tagged salmon, so we can see who their salmon that have escaped. I think we have a very preventive effect. But so far the farmers not been interested in this.
