Life after severance package

Tobias Hatløy went with a plan to sail a round around north Atlantic. Downsizing in the oil industry made the plan possible for electronics engineer.

– It was a good deal, says 29-year-old from Ulsteinvik.

With low-cost budget he will roughly a six-month severance package to one year voyage along what sailors call “pickup route.”

End Package Surfer Tobias Hatløy was young, newly hired and barely warm in the jersey when the oil crisis was underway for well one year ago. In eighteen years he had worked as an engineer at FMC Kongsberg when downsizing was notified. There it was to be that it was he who had to get out. His first thought was that now bust dream voyage he had been thinking about for several years.

– I realized that I was at risk, if someone lost their job so it was probably me, says Hatløy.

When the job was not as confident as he had first imagined, he chose an alternative plan.

instead of risking dismissal, chose the young engineer to jump on a severance package of six months’ salary. The outlook in the job market was anything but bright. To the appropriate engineer jobs were 2-300 applicants.

As it turned out it was just the severance package that would realize the dream.

As part of the new plan, he took first one years as a recreational teacher folk to be secured work for a while, Hatløy went into a more frugal lifestyle and has cut down on unnecessary expenses such as Netflix and Spotify.

Below deck ukulele and longboards adequately secured havkrysning. 29-year-old has posted a route where it is possible to unfold on surfing, climbing and skiing in Greenland. Along the way friends patterns on and off.

– I have lady, but I’m the one running the show, he said.

At the end of the race he will start the job search from the sailboat.

Head of Nito-lawyer Erlend Aarsand think it is wise to use severance package period well.

– One should not rest too long on the final package. It is important to recover quickly to the market.

He thinks it’s silly that it is often younger workers who disappear in the final package rounds.

– Several of the major companies in the supplier industry has lost several cohorts. If it only goes beyond new employees, it may be unfortunate.

Tobias Hatløy hope that through career choice with the severance package will open up opportunities for a more practical engineering job.

– Work approach is not something for me. When I would see how things works out, says 29-year-old who likes to screw in the sailboat.

In the months after he left engineering job, he thought closely about what he will spend the time.

– I would not spend my whole life to improve one circuit board or working in Excel.
