the article has been added to your reading list.

in 1996 started Trine Tryggestad as a trainee in Storebrand. For 20 years she worked for the same employer, in various positions in communications and marketing. But on July 1 this year it was over.

– Storebrand many other companies experienced significant downsizing and reorganization, and this time it was my department – marketing – that was hit. The position I had disappeared from the organizational chart – and I accepted a severance package, she says.

Losing your job is never easy, but Trine chose to look positively on the situation. A few years earlier she had taken an education in food and health, which she had not yet gotten used. Now was the time.

Being a full-time student again

– Taking severance package provides the opportunity to make a change and go new ways. Although I have long been interested in food, culture, health and nutrition, and now I want to work with communication in relation to this, she said.

This week she starts to work on a voluntary basis as a web journalist goat Myra food culture center. And in a few weeks, she takes hold of a yearlong education program full time at the University College in Vestfold / Buskerud.

– I can not wait to become a student again at the age of 45 years. I have over the years worked in the insurance industry, and therefore I need refills of new knowledge and skills to change course. That’s what I want, says Trine Tryggestad.

Got career help – came on the right path

In connection with the severance package she got professional career counseling and talks with a coach. This led her through a thorough process of awareness.

– I found that I fit into a job that by teaching and dissemination to do. To go in this direction feels right for me. Volunteering alongside their studies gives me no salary, yet I see it as a valuable opportunity to develop skills and gain access to a network that can open up new opportunities for my next career. The final package gives me the opportunity and the time to think through what I really want, she says.

– I’m going to keep my eyes open for new and interesting jobs even during the period of study, but I have time to think well about and making conscious choices. The aim is to use the severance package sensible and make it last until I finish studies next spring, so I feel compelled to take a job I did not want, she adds.

She has seen several around them switch industry and choose to emigrate to the teaching profession. It seems exciting, admits she. But still she does not know quite what kind of job that gets her next.

While she explores the teaching profession, she also looking for opportunities to work with communication in businesses that operate in areas of interest her.

– I think more and more are going to have to change industry during their careers in the future. The workplace is changing, and it’s tough times. Occupations disappears and other professions is growing. I am 45 years with family and children, and is of course concerned about security. For me it was important to think about where I see myself in ten years. The teaching profession is certainly a profession that is not going to disappear. It is an attractive profession in many ways, she said.

– Much to rethink

The owner and partner Erik Falk Hansen AND-S, which stands behind the restructuring program DUJSK, told DN that it is ideal to take severance packages for those who actually want a long period without work.

– People need to be prepared that it can be hard to get a job immediately stopping the old. Have one economy or “nerves” to go without a job for a while, a severance package be a good idea. One must also look at the economic: Can we do without job even after the money from the severance package is used up? This one must think carefully, he said.
