It reigns confusion about the requirement of a lifejacket on a boat. – Siste.no

From 1 May, it was mandatory to wear life jackets in the yacht, but not for everyone and not under all conditions. 40 percent of boaters are uncertain about the new rules, according to a survey by YouGov has done for Codan Forsikring.

– Unfortunately this survey shows that the new rules are confusing for people, says Head of the boat in insurance, Stein Victor Svendsen.

Boating enthusiasts were asked about awareness of the new rules and whether it was mandatory to wear life jackets in the following situations:

1. Imagine that you are sailing inshore, in 5 knots one in 25 foot sailboat, and it’s quiet at bay.

2. Imagine that you’re sitting on a 30 foot ribbing with 200 horsepower motor in 25 knots.

Although 6 of 10 believed they could rules, said 22 percent error on the first statement and 67 percent answered incorrectly on the other.



Important decree

It also emerges from the survey that 20 percent of boaters have not notified that it has been an imposition.

– Previous research we’ve done shows that there is a majority of the people for a lifejacket decree, and several tragic accidents in recent years have shown the importance of using a lifejacket on a boat, stressing Stein Victor Svendsen. (ANB)
