(Hegnar.no): Unemployment rose by 200 people during May, according to seasonally adjusted figures from NAV.

Tougher times in the oil industry

– The reduced activity in the oil industry provides a significant increase in unemployment in counties where the oil industry employs many and for professions such as engineers and industrial workers. But this was offset by unemployment falls in other parts of the country so that the unemployment rate for the country overall has only risen slightly in recent months, said Acting Labor and Welfare Director Kjersti Monland comments.

Measured in the number of people the unemployment rate in May most people with a background in construction work and engineering and ICT subjects, while the largest decline in retail and sales and for people with no or unknown occupational background.

Finnmark Hordaland greatest percentage increase in unemployment in May, while Oppland and Sogn og Fjordane counties was the biggest fall.



75,000 unemployed

At the end of May, the unemployment rate of 2.7 percent of the workforce, unchanged from the same time last year. DNB Markets had expected an unemployment rate of 2.8 percent, while the consensus was at 3.0 percent.

At the end of May, 75,000 persons were registered as unemployed with NAV. There are 2,500 more than the same time last year.

The total of unemployed and job seekers on measures was at 88,600, 1,000 more than the same time last year. Gross unemployment is thus of 3.2 percent, the same level as last year.

Engineers increased the most

Compared with May last year, unemployment has risen most for the engineering and ICT (61 percent). 5,400 people are now unemployed, 2,100 more than the same time last year.

Below average

Unemployment is highest in construction by 5.0 percent, and among industrial workers by 4.3 prosent.Lavest unemployment we find in teaching by 0.7 percent and academic careers by 0.9 percent.

Oil Heavy counties

Not surprisingly, unemployment has risen most in oil heavy Rogaland, Hordaland and West Agder compared with May last year. In these three counties have unemployment increased respectively. 49, 19 and 16 percent. Together, the 4,100 people.

Unemployment has fallen most in Hedmark, Oppland and Østfold, with declines respectively. 12, 11 and 9 percent. Unemployment is now lower than a year ago in most counties in eastern Norway and Nord-Trøndelag and Northern Norway.

Unemployment is highest in Oslo, with 3.4 percent of the workforce, followed by Oslo, Telemark and Aust-Agder – all with 3.3 percent. Unemployment is lowest in Sogn og Fjordane and Oppland, respectively. 1.9 and 2.0 percent.
