Unemployment increases in oil counties – Stocklink financial information

Seasonally adjusted figures from NAV show that there were 200 more unemployed during May.

At the end of the month were 75,000 people registered as unemployed with NAV, according to unadjusted figures.

Compared to May last year, unemployment has increased by 2,500 people, and is 2.7 percent of the workforce, unchanged from May last year.

– The reduced activity in the oil industry provides clear increase in unemployment in counties where the oil industry employs many, and for professions such as engineers and industrial workers. But this was offset by unemployment falls in other parts of the country so that the unemployment rate for the country overall has only risen slightly in recent months, said Acting Labor and Welfare Director Kjersti Monland.

Within the engineering and ICT subjects it was at end-May 5400 registered unemployed. It is 2,100 more than in May last year.

Most of this increase has come among engineers and civil engineers, where unemployment has risen by 143 per cent last year. In particular, it engineers and civil engineers in petroleum experiencing higher unemployment, reports NAV.

Still, the unemployment rate of 2.0 percent for people with a background in engineering and ICT subjects well below the average level of unemployment.

Then there within groups brokers and consultants and people with a background in industrial work, where unemployment increased the most, with respectively 18 and 15 per cent last year. These professions are also affected by the situation in the oil industry, noting NAV.

Geographically, unemployment has risen most in oil counties Rogaland, Hordaland and West Agder compared with May last year, respectively 49, 19 and 16 percent.
