Norwegian Christian was the best in the cohort of French elite schools – Aftenposten

31-year-old from Sandnes recently returned to Norway after an extensive study in France. The stay at INSEAD (Institut européen d’administration des affaires) exceeded all expectations for Westly Christian Larsen.

Still ended the 31-year old from Sandnes up with the best grade average.

– How does one become the best in such an assembly?

– At INSEAD group is very important. There are periods that are very hardworking, and you really have to stand on in groups. I think I made a positive contribution in that I’m good at motivating others – especially those times when the group had slightly less motivation, it was important, says Larsen.

Students in the MBA program may have very different academic backgrounds before . But regardless of whether they were originally studied technology or social sciences, is the common denominator for many of them that they have been the best in their environment.

Honest feedback

As a student with the best grade point average, received Larsen, “The Henry Ford II Prize.”

Collaboration between students from completely different countries and with different professional backgrounds, characteristic of INSEAD, according to Larsen. In one of the groups he worked in, there was a Canadian, one Indian, one Ukraine and a student from Dubai.

– We were skilled at giving each other feedback, and got more feedback on what others really think about you than that which is common to the workplace. It was particularly interesting in this study, as we sometimes were put under great pressure.

One of his most important personal lessons from INSEAD is daring to disagree with a proposed solution.

– If you had asked me earlier about a product idea was good, I could have answered yes, even though I was incredulous. I have gotten better at sharing my true opinions, said the gentle man.

Impressed Helge Lund

Statoil CEO Helge Lund has studied at INSEAD in France, and think it is a great achievement by Christian Larsen Westly to be the best at this school.

– I must say that I am impressed by what he has achieved, says the CEO.

Helge Lund looks feat given that INSEAD attracts talented students from all over the world, and that most of these also have significant work experience.

– If he continues with oil and gas, it is very good for our industry. We have many challenges to overcome in the decades to come, says Helge Lund.

Larsen is now employed by the multinational oil service company Schlumberger.

Entrepreneurship

Helge Lund sitting in INSEAD Council Norway as ambassador for the school. He has followed quite closely since he graduated in 1991.

– I think they are good at stimulating entrepreneurship. Many people start their own businesses after training.

For my own part, he has always wanted to work with international issues. The stay at INSEAD gave many impulses and not least many friends all over the world.

Now he sometimes talks to students at the school itself.

– I think part of it with my job is to communicate. It’s nice to be able to help with practical experience, he says.

Kunnskapsdeleren

Christian Westly Larsen worked too well in school growing up.

– I had very skilled teachers in Sandnes. I have much to thank them for, he says.

Svein Westly, a lecturer at Sandnes high, says Larsen was a student who was both positive and asked critical questions. The two share names, but are not related.

He remembers former student well, although there are twelve years ago Larsen graduated from Sandnes school.

– He was the best in class, and also very well developed socially. The group helped Christian without lecturing. He shared knowledge.

Graduate of before

At INSEAD, several of the students about 30 years, they tend to have a master’s degree from before and up to several years of work experience.

Christian Westly Larsen is already a MSc in Computer Science from NTNU and has worked on programming for the oil industry.

It sounds so surprising when the Larsen describes the study of INSEAD as an extreme version of the Norwegian school. He uses this image to describe the variety of the combination of courses and a greater incidence of oral involvement than what many are used in higher education.

– There is two-way communication during lectures, which is very interesting because the students have much to contribute.

During the academic year at INSEAD was Christian Westly Larsen deployed a period in Silicon Valley. He is inspired by the American entrepreneurial culture and believes one can ask the question of why, for example, Tesla does not come from Norway.

– There are many who are trying to create something new there. It has the same attitude as radio and television entrepreneur Vebjørn Tandberg had, and you are not afraid to fail. It’s actually really accepted that ails you. Maybe I start for myself someday.

Creative and sociable

Jarl Eirik Tronerud is the head of the software development department where Larsen has worked for Schlumberger in Stavanger. He describes Larsen as a creative and extremely sociable person. Tronerud think Larsen can succeed as an entrepreneur.

– He is the type of person who can succeed no matter if it is a large international company or a sole proprietorship. Whatever the need Christian new challenges, otherwise he probably restless.
