70 employees terminated in Maersk Drilling – Future of the North

Press spokesperson for the Danish rig company Helene Aagaard confirmed to Stavanger Aftenbladet that of 130 people who currently work at Maersk Reacher, the 70 employees who will be dismissed. Other reallocated to other projects or move the rig out.

Last year, two of its rigs sent out by the Norwegian shelf. One of the Danish side and one in circulation in Frederikshavn. And summer of 2015 came news that Maersk had to reduce its workforce by 170 employees.

Association Chairman of Maersk employees’ union Frode Larsen says that the mood in the company is hesitant, and that there is still uncertainty among employees.

Maersk Drilling currently has seven rigs in the Norwegian continental shelf. Most are under contract until 2018 or 2019. But besides Maersk Reacher, will also Maersk Inspirer stand without a contract after the rig concludes an assignment for Statoil in December.

In the latest market update its, the company writes that rig industry faces major challenges ahead. This is due both to investment cuts due to low oil prices and an oversupply of rigs in the market. (© NTB)
