- I think this is the new way of working – Dagens Næringsliv

– For me the job is a lifestyle. Then I either “summer” with myself some weeks, says Atle Sommerfeldt from Skudeneshavn to DN.

60-year-old company operates Spain Summer along with his wife, something he has done for 15 years.

– To learn a vacation substitute costs much time and money, so when I do either job yourself. Now I’m here in Altea in Spain on holiday, but I put two to three hours each day to work. From 8 to 11 o’clock I have office hours – and I’ll take the rest of the day. It’s something I live fine, says Sommerfeldt on mobile from the pool deck.

He is definitely not the only one who can not log off completely during vacation:

Every fifth employee plan work while they really have summer vacation. Just as many are prepared to work if something were to happen.

It shows a recent workplace survey YouGov conducted leadership training company Dale Carnegie Training Norway.

– Not surprising, but scary. When you’re on vacation, be on vacation. Job performances are not better off working holiday, neither do family relationships, says Ingrid Schjelderup Bygland in Dale Carnegie Training.

– Cross Press

– We perform no better either as an individual or as an organization if we work holiday. Rather, I think it helps a cross-pressures between work and family, ensuring the individual guilty, and that eventually leads to poorer performance, says Bygland.

Atle Sommerfeldt, however, a different view:

– I have 14 days holiday now, but even if I work a little every day, I feel that I have much free with family. When running a small company is nearly impossible to turn 100 percent on “vacation button.” We can not be completely inaccessible to our customers in two weeks. When we deliver a poorer product, he said.

He runs a service portal for housing in Spain, and has since 2002 helped homeowners in Spain getting sold / rented their residence.

– in that sense, you can say that we are closer to our market here than at home in Skudeneshavn, where we live. But we have had rental in Altea since 2008 and perfectly capable of taking proper holiday too – although I have decorated a small office in the basement, he said.

– Can not stop the business

– I think this is the new way of working, at least for some entrepreneurs and others who operate small companies. One can not simply stop the business a few weeks and take full holiday. That’s not how things work, says Atle Sommerfeldt.

52 percent of respondents in the survey said they did not plan what to do the first few weeks when they return from vacation before they leave.

only 11 percent do this fully, while 32 percent said they partially do this.

– There are several benefits to plan what to do after the holidays. Maybe you realize then that it is completely unnecessary to work holiday. Do we know what we should do, it’s easier to get properly started when we’re back, and we become more productive. We perform simply better, says Ingrid Schjelderup Bygland.

– Have not learned to say no

She points out that mobile and internet means that we can now work anywhere anytime, but the survey also shows that many are at the work their holiday.

– One reason why someone working holiday can be that they have not clarified expectations with their immediate supervisor or colleagues, or that bad planning is behind in terms of prioritizing tasks before they go on holiday, says Bygland.

of investigation also revealed that it is among those under 34 years (32 per cent) where as many planned to work in his holiday.

– This is not surprising. Young people have enough yet learned to say no, or feel that they are in a position to say no or to clarify expectations with their leader. Clear communication and expectation clarification is essential for everyone to achieve goals and perform better, she says.

To clear logging completely good conscience during the summer holidays, the Dale Carnegie Training five vacation common sense rules:

1) Clarify expectations.

2) priority, priority, priority.

3) Delegate and create best practices for the holidays .

4) Plan autumn, clearing away. Be sure to book meetings and deliveries for the autumn calendar.

5) Be on holiday when you are on holiday.
