Sandnesgauk designing new banknotes – Aftenbladet.no

In a year, Terje Tønnessen spent evenings, nights and weekends to draw the new papers from Norges Bank. The mission is not only the front of the 100-krone banknote, but the front pages of all the note series of 50 notes, 100, 500 and 1000 notes. Architecture firm Snøhetta will create the backs.



– Horrible much time

– We are three pieces that have dealt with this. The other is Are Kleivan and Christian Schnitler The Metric System. We have spent an awful lot of time on this.

– Has it been fun?

– This is so large as it can be. It is Norway’s business card. It is very, very honorable to have one like that kind of job.

Former Norges Bank has been responsible for the development and design of the Norwegian papers. This is the first time the central bank announced a tender. 70 signed up and eight went to the finals.

Norges Bank had defined the theme “Sea” that the new notes basic theme.

– Are you finished with your job?

– I very much do not. This is a draft. So we will add details and security features, but Norges Bank has decided which subjects they want.

– Do you get any of the notes themselves?

– No, I have settled on the account, says sandnesgauken, who also illustrated packaging motifs of Freia milk chocolate.

No longer engraving

When Tønnessen and his two colleagues have finished the design, the designers at Norges Bank draw it again as line drawings. From there to the final printing plates go via the data.

– It is no longer so engravers stock papers, but it will look like it is engraved.

– If you get a copy of the press plates?

– No, but you could always wish, chuckling Terje Tønnessen.

From Stangeland

43-year-old grew up on Stangeland in Sandnes. He moved to Oslo as a student 21 years ago and lives today in Nordstrand south of Oslo.

The new banknotes will be in circulation earlier in 2017.
